Dr Suren Putter
Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
MBChB, MRCPsych, FRANZCP, CCT in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Dr Suren Putter is the Principal Psychiatrist and Director at Toowoomba Youth Mental Health Service,
Dr Suren started her medical career in South Africa where she worked as a General Practitioner in a small town before moving to Scotland where she trained in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. In 2009, after working as a consultant in Lanarkshire, Dr Suren and her family moved to Toowoomba to begin work at the Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) at Queensland Health.
While at CYMHS she realised that the need for private psychiatric services for children and adolescents in Toowoomba was high. She started private practice sessions at Withcott Medical Centre, but it soon became clear that other than a psychiatrist, young people and their families also needed a child and family friendly environment to be welcomed to.
With this in mind, Dr Suren established Toowoomba Youth Mental Health Services at 205 West Street, Toowoomba, in August 2017.
Approaches and Values
Dr Suren believes in a evidence based, attachment informed and child centered approach. She has special interest in helping young people and their families with pervasive development disorders such as ASD, ADHD, and learning difficulties.
With over 20 years of experience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Dr Suren Putter-Lareman has extensive experience working with children and adolescents with ADHD, ASD, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, psychosis and other mental health difficulties.
As an experienced Psychiatrist, Dr Suren understands the important interaction of biological and psychological processes that underlay mental health problems in young people. As such, the best approach would often be combining physical treatments (such as medication) with psychotherapies.
Dr Suren is trained in Family Therapy, Psychoanalytical and Cognitive Therapies, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Theraplay®™, Synergistic Play Therapy®™, and Mentalization Based Therapy. She believes that no therapy is perfect for everyone and takes an individual approach with each patient and their family.

Jackie Wright
Occupational Therapist
Jackie is an experienced Occupational Therapist who has worked across public, private, non-government and university sectors across Queensland and South Australia for the past 30 years. She has worked primarily in the mental health sector with infants, children, adolescents, families and adults. As an Occupational Therapist, she is interested in using “occupations” (that is, the activities people engage in or that “occupy” their time) including what is important to people, what might get in the way of doing what is important to them or their family and how to help people engage in the occupations that are most important to them and their families.
Jackie uses assessments and interventions that help to better understand a person’s strengths and challenges as well as the strengths and challenges of the support people and environment around them to inform what the best approach might be to assist them. Approaches can include supporting skills development for the person, assisting their family or those who care for them to confidently provide the “just right” support, exploring what environmental supports might be helpful and working collaboratively with the person and their family to achieve their goals.
Jackie offers:
- Cognitive therapies (including CBT and DBT)
- Play therapies (including Theraplay ® and Child-Centred Play Therapy)
- Family-based therapies (including Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy)
-
Assessments and interventions to support functioning in areas such as toileting, sleeping, learning, social skills, self regulation skills, emotion regulation skills and problem solving skills.
Jackie has a special interest in working with children and families with trauma-related presentations, ADHD and ASD. Jackie also has a strong interest in infant mental health, working with parents and caregivers to support the emotional development of their babies and toddlers. She uses neuro-affirming, family-centred, trauma informed, developmentally appropriate and relationship based approaches in her work. She works with patients aged 0 – 65 years old.
